When treating wastewater, the degradation process in a wastewater treatment plant produces a fine biological sludge. In order to achieve a stable degradation process during the biological clarification stage, the sludge produced in the secondary clarifiers (also known as residual sludge) needs to be removed and sent to the digestion tank. The residual sludge from the secondary clarifiers is pumped into the COSE decanter centrifuge. The machine separates the solids from the liquids in the residual sludge by centrifugal acceleration. The residual sludge is thickened and the dry matter content is increased from 0.5-1% (5-10 grams per liter) to 8%.
The dry matter content of the thickened sludge depends on the pumpability of the thickened sludge and the thickening equipment used.

Concentration centrifuges have a very low mains speed and consume little electricity. Therefore, power consumption can be further reduced by up to 20%.
